Recipe: Korean chopped salad with sesame dressing


My favourite cuisines are without a doubt Japanese and Korean. It’s a bit surprising perhaps considering that I have a strong aversion to seafood, and I’m a massive cheese fiend. This crunchy salad has been my go-to salad for years. It’s delicious with spring rolls, gyoza, tofu katsu or simply topped with a fried egg.


Sweetheart cabbage or green cabbage
Daikon or radishes
Black sesame seeds
Rice vinegar
Toasted sesame oil
Soy sauce

Preparation method

1. Grate carrots and radishes into a large bowl. Shred the cabbage and slice the gherkins. Add them to the bowl and mix all the vegetables together.

2. In a small bowl mix all the ingredients for the sesame dressing. I do this to taste but I would advice you to not go overboard with the sesame oil. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss until all the vegetables are evenly coated.

Note: I mixed mayonnaise with Eat the Bits Chilli Oil and drizzled it over the salad but it’s equally yummy with gochujang (fermented Korean chilli paste). If you decide to use neither, add fresh ginger and garlic to the dressing. Also, try adding bean sprouts or edamame to the salad.

  1. mmmmm, yummy! yummy! I cannot wait to try this recipe! I also really adore Japanese and Korean food (even though the latter can be problematic for me since I have no resistance whatsoever to chilli). I’ craving some nice crunchy veggies now ^_^

    • It’s super yummy! ^_^ Oh I LOVE chilli. I worked in a spice shop a couple of years ago and learnt loads about chilli (and spices). All types of chillies have different flavours and strengths. I also built up my tolerance to chilli working there. Let me know what you think of the salad!

  2. This looks delicious! I love Korean and Japanese food too, and I love gherkins, chilli and anything sesame! I bet this would be yummy with some grilled tofu on top. I’m hungry just thinking about it. Also, your rainbow plate is really cute xx

    • Thank you, Jess! I have pickles, chilli and sesame any chance I get. Grilled tofu would be amazing! I’m going to have to try that now. The plate is designed by Miller Goodman. :) xx
